Wimborne 21/08/22

With Mike H sitting at Wimborne’s ground watching Dorset, the Wanderers struggled to get a team together for the match against Wimborne at Colehill.  David and Simon opened the batting after Skipper elected to bat first.  David had struck 2 fours before he was c&b with a delivery that stopped on him.  Mike M (4) had a short but entertaining innings and then Skipper joined Simon at 31-2 from 8 overs.  Simon (22), having played a brilliantly patient innings, then played a sweep shot to a straight ball that left the umpire with no option but to raise the finger (51-3, 12).  Skipper (10) was looking comfortable until he failed to connect with a full toss and was caught at mid-off (55-4, 13). Ben and then Foz were both bowled for no score leaving  the innings in tatters at 62-6 from 16 overs.  Big Dog and Leo dug deep to recover some control, with Leo scoring all of his 24 runs in fours.  When Leo was bowled, Stu came in at 108-7 with 13 overs still available.  Again, patience was the order of the day as these 2 put on 72 for the eighth wicket.  Big Dog (33) was eventually bowled, but with the score at 180-8, a total was being posted.  Stu (37) was caught in the penultimate over having scored all but 1 run in fours!  James hit the ball to mid-wicket where he was caught for no score leaving Luke 0 not out and the total 184 all out in 38.5 overs.

After tea, it was clear that any undue loss of line or length was going to be heavily punished.  Stu went for 20 off 3 overs while Leo was bowling well, up the hill.  David (1-20 in 4 overs) came on and got a breakthrough when the batsman played across the line to a straight delivery.  Foz bowled one of his better spells of accurate bowling but both batsman looked comfortable at the crease, taking Luke (who was feeling the effects of a back injury) apart and despite Ben bowling some excellent in-swinging deliveries, hitting him out of the ground.  After one such six, the batsman retired, only for a similar high quality batsman to arrive.  It was all rather processional, despite Foz’s extended appeals each time the ball hit the pads, and victory for Wimborne came in the 29th over.

MOM: Leo – A solid batting performance holding the innings together and good spell of bowling.

Catch of the day: Sadly the ball was going too far over the boundary for a catch!

Quote of the day: Simon – celebrating exuberantly after being hit out of the ground with the ball ending up near Mike H in Wimborne: “It’s a dot ball” with the local rules stating a six cannot be hit in that part of the ground.
