Plush 21/07/19
July 27, 2019On a beautiful day for playing cricket, the Wanderers gathered in the Brace of Pheasants for some lunchtime beers. The square was not ready on arrival to allow a bit of time to prepare. The Wanderers were put into bat and Simon and Dog started brightly with the 50-partnership coming in the 10th over. Simon’s first 5 scoring shots were fours and it wasn’t long before he added some sixes into the mix. Dog was supporting well, with both players happy to play on the merit of the delivery and awaiting anything that was short and begging to be hit. Big Dog (31) hit a six just before he sportingly walked when caught behind with the opening stand worth 98 from 15 overs. Conrad (16) looked to be in fine form until he too snicked to the keeper. Meanwhile Simon was continuing to hit the ball to the boundary. However, he did give an excellent chance when an attempted cut went straight up into the air and landed in between 5 fielders! With Tom W at the crease Simon continued to attack and was caught on the long-on boundary for 98. Mike M continued his fine weekend form clattering some big shots to the boundary to complement the big hitting from Tom. Mike (25) was bowled by the youngster who also picked up the wicket of David (1) last ball of the innings as he attempted a ramp shot!
Mark was again brilliant opening the bowling with a fantastic spell of line and length with variation in pace causing no end of difficulties. It was PW that opened from the other end and he found a good rhythm, bowling through. Mark took a wicket in over 3 with an amazing delivery that moved just short of a length and left the batsman. He repeated the feat in the next over to leave figures of 4-4-0-2! PW was unlucky when Simon couldn’t hold a thin edge but got reward when another good length ball drew the batsman forward only to be fooled by the turn and Simon was able to take off the bails. David appeared to be unfortunate when an attempted pull got a top edge and went high towards square leg. Mike H was there but did not move a muscle. The ball came down within a yard of him, but Tommy had made the ground from mid-wicket and took a comfortable catch. Next ball was a swipe at a short delivery that went out to the deep mid-wicket boundary where Tommy made the catch look simple. The field came in for the hattrick ball but unfortunately it was a full toss outside off-stump. Tommy came on to provide the buffet and took 3 wickets in the process! Big Dog bowled an over where Mark harshly caught the young batsman (no-ball called) only for him to repeat the feat next over to win the game! DWCC win by 39 runs.
MOM: Simon
Catch of the day: Tommy in the deep
Quote of the day: Mike H: “I couldn’t see the ball above the rim of my hat!”
