Derwent Globetrotters 30/6/18
July 1, 2018After a lunchtime beer in the sweltering heat, Simon and Fred commenced proceedings with a delayed start due to a car in each camp being delayed. The Wanderers elected to bat and David and Tommy had the honour. Simon and Luke complemented the fielding due to the delays and it was a pleasure to watch Tommy in such fine form. 5 of his first 6 scoring shots were fours and he was quick to get well back to anything short and cut and pull with the ball racing away off the electric fast outfield. These two looked at ease until David was dropped twice in quick succession before he was eventually caught for 19 with the opening partnership worth 101. Will S replaced him and the speed of the running between these two was impressive and actually managed to run a few 2’s! As Tommy accelerated towards a ton, he was caught for 81. Alec went in at number 4 and looked accomplished from the start. He and Will looked very comfortable together until Will (64) got a shooter that he tried to hit on the second bounce and missed! Simon got off the mark second ball with a six over point and then scored off every other ball in his cameo innings of 28 from 9 balls. Peter was caught for 8 and Will F joined his brother in the last over, in which Alec scored heavily to finish 30 not out. 261-5 looked a decent score but the quality of the pitch meant getting 10 wickets could be difficult.
After a great tea provided by Simon’s parents, Luke took the new ball coming down the hill. He was into a brilliant line and length straight away and looked a threat all day. Will F struggled up the hill to find a full length whereas David was zipping the ball through when he replaced him, but still the occasional short delivery was punished to the boundary. The opening wicket was an uppish cut off Luke to Will S at point. A sharp chance was missed by Bob at slip but did not cost as Luke got him a few balls later with another catch by Will at point. Simon got a bruised arm taking a fizzer down leg side from David that allegedly came off the bat. David took a fine wicket with a full-length delivery taking the top of leg stump, but it was key to the innings to get the number 3 batsman who was dominating most of the bowling and took a special like to Tommy, carting him for 40 from 2 overs! With Fred now at the crease and looking to further his run scoring on this ground, a breakthrough was needed. This was achieved by Will F (1-48) coming back down the hill and getting an LBW decision in his favour when it looked to be heading down leg side. A great piece of fielding from Tommy created another run out for the fielding Wanderers. David (3-79) took 2 more wickets before the key moment – again from Luke – in dismissing the top scorer on 126. While trying to marshal the strike and get a single off the last ball, he was rooted in front of the stumps and gave the umpire a simple decision. A 4th wicket for Luke brought the last man in who successfully negotiated the last 3 overs to claim the draw. Some expensive bowling figures is more testament to the quality of the pitch and batting rather than the bowling, which was backed up by some good and some poor fielding displays. 228-9 was how the innings closed.
MOM: Luke 13-4-38-4
Catch of the day: Will took 2 good ones at point.
Quote of the day: “How’s that?” Someone said it when Fred was on strike!!!
