Cerne Valley 5/8/18

Posted on by Simon

On another lovely summer’s day in Cerne Abbas, the Wanderers were put into bat.  Mike W (13) and Peter (10) opened the innings and for most of the early exchanges extras was by far the fastest scorer.  Both openers were caught at mid-wicket to poor deliveries and Will was lucky to escape a good shout for stumping.  Will didn’t look to be at his most fluent on his last appearance of the season and he departed LBW for 13.  Tommy was also struggling to get the ball off the square and when he was stumped for 4, Zee came in to join Simon with the score 71-4.  By this time Simon had already got off the mark with 2 sixes and was looking to keep the pace going.  Zee was commanding the crease as well and the scoring rate was phenomenal.  Simon (62) was eventually c&b when he skied an attempted drive, but the partnership of 75 was crucial to the innings.  Zee (41) was bowled which brought Nipper to join Will F (4) before he too was bowled.  Nipper (18) added steadily before hitting some late boundaries while David (11) hit some great pulls to deep backward square leg.  Paul was run out without troubling the scorers!  A total of 214-9 was a good effort.

Luke opened the attack and was just as difficult to get away as previous weeks.  He was complimented by David who was ideal for this situation, tying up the opening pair and not giving any run scoring opportunities.  When the had finished their spell of 5 overs each, Luke had gone for 14 and David for just 6.  The 2 Fosters joined the attack next and it was difficult to see who the senior player was!  the skipper and opening bat was eventually run out by another example of the high-quality fielding from the Wanderers.  Nipper (8-2) took a wicket with his first ball, a pacey delivery that took out leg-stump.  He was accurate and caused all sorts of problems for the batsmen.  At the other end, Tommy (33-2) was serving up his offering at the buffet which eventually bought 2 wickets.  Zee had a spell that culminated with having 4 slips and a gulley!  In the end a 46-run victory for the Wanderers.

Catch of the day: No catches held (although Nipper did drop one at slip!)

Quote of the day: “Has Mike Tomms been here before?” Looking at a smashed chair by the side of the pavilion! (see WhatsApp for image).  However, in true style, Tommy managed to replicate when he sat down the chair broke under him – now aka Tommy Tomms!
