Compton House 28/05/19

On a bright evening despite the chilly wind, the Wanderers just about managed to field 10 players due to late unavailability.  Having elected to bat, big Mike (0) was caught in the slips in the first over from a leg break that caught him by surprise.  Simon looked in good form hitting runs quickly and getting Mike Moore running at the other end!  A glorious driven 6 to cow corner was the highlight of the innings.  Mike (8) was caught at cover when an attempted bash hit high on the bat.  Simon (21) was given out LBW when it may have been down leg side and momentum was never regained.  Ali (6) struggled to make good contact before he was bowled but Will (9) played a textbook innings batting through with his Dad (who was bowled for 8) and his brother Alec (who was also bowled for 1).  David (3) was unfortunate to find fielders when he had made good contact and PW was LBW for no score.  Simon was allowed back in to join Mike H as last man and hit an additional 9. 102-9 was a low score for the conditions but reasonable effort given the shortcomings of the batting.

David and Will both struggled to find their rhythm although David was unlucky to have Simon take a catch in the deep only for it to be signalled no-ball on height.  However, Ali and Alec posed an altogether different threat.  With Ali moving the ball into the batsmen and Alec hitting a good line and length with a hint of movement down the hill, they bowled well in tandem.  Alec hit top of middle on the last ball of his 1st over and then Ali hit leg stump next over.  Alec’s next ball was skied by the opener and again Simon took the catch but this time with no recall.  No one seemed to realise that the next ball was hat-trick ball, but it passed without incident.  Another wicket this over for Alec, this time destroying leg stump, was making the game interesting although runs were coming freely.  Ali (2-19) bowled well and deserved his success.  Alec took his 4th wicket on his last ball to leave him with 4-34.  Paul bowled an expensive over to leave PW to bowl with only 1 required.

Compton House win by 3 wickets.
