Priston 14/7/18

After the usual splendid breakfast at Pylle, the Wanderers started the tour at the Ring O’ Bells.  The home team then elected to field.  The Shardlows opened the batting and Will was going to take on the spinner from the start, with David knocking singles and the odd boundary.  The 100 partnership came up in the 17th over.  Will was mercilessly pinging the ball to the boundary with speed which, on a hard and dry outfield, was difficult for the fielders to stop safely!  Will retired his innings when another stinging four brought up his 152 with the opening partnership worth 215.  David (63no) batted through for his highest ever Wanderers’ score and first half-century with the incoming batsman Nick (on loan from Huntspill).  After a while of hunting, Nick managed to find the middle and cracked some good fours in his 31no.  The tea time declaration was 262-1.

Another A list tea was provided by Priston in the hot sunshine, with players finding shade under the tree!  Luke and Conrad opened the bowling and Luke was as effective as normal.  He was bowling accurately causing real difficulty for the batsmen.  Conrad was providing more variety than the Royal Variety Performance with quicker balls, extra flight, turn and swing!  And it was Conrad who got the all-important breakthrough when Bobby (Priston opening bat) was duped by a ball with exaggerated flight that took the top of middle stump.  He could have had another if Mike M had held a smart chance one handed in the slips!  Nick did a good job of tying down the batsmen and deserved his wicket (9-3-17-1).  The pitch was too green for Bob to generate any pace, bounce or turn and PW was unlucky to have a catch put down by David when it hit his arm at short mid-wicket and then seemed to roll onto his stomach as he fell back, only for the ball to squirm out onto the ground!  David was causing real difficulty for the batsmen with the ball angled into them and just short of a length.  He got 3 wickets including a good catch from Will (7-1-20-3).  Both Luke (29-2) and Conrad (53-1) came back at the end to try to force a breakthrough but the resistance was too good.  Luke did get a breakthrough in the penultimate over when Nick took a breath-taking catch low down in front of him at short leg.  However, Priston had too much left in the bag to be defeated and finished on 164-7.
